During our lessons recently, Esma has been telling us about her childhood growing up in Turkey as way to learn and understand what life is like in her culture. Levi found this particularly story interesting as she shared how people in her village burn dry cow patties in their stoves to stay warm in the winter and cook food.

For months I’ve been seeking opportunities…

For months I’ve been seeking opportunities where I can use something I enjoy (art) to connect with other moms and kids. Art is big here and many people do different crafts and have various skills. I’ve hosted a few paint nights and even searched for an art or painting class but ironically couldn’t find anything. Interestingly, during a fund raiser that we helped with, our friend Sönmez was doing henna and everyone just loved it. So afterwards, we invited her to come over one day and teach us. The next day at a neighborhood birthday party, our neighbors (from all ages and places) were so excited and asked if we could do henna together! I was shocked. Traditionally women do henna the night before their wedding, so many of them were sharing with me about what it looked like etc. Since then, almost every day a neighbor and or a friend has come over to hang out and talk while I do a design for them. It’s been so much fun to have people drop by and ask me to do a design for them. I never would have thought the art I’d discover here would be henna, but it’s something people love here and has allowed us to connect with others. ️

Although I’ve hosted a few paint nights I was looking for something more regular like a class where I could meet new people. However, I couldn’t find anything. This past week we celebrated “Labor Day” here. Dean’s team hosted a big picnic for all the families. One of the guy’s wife is a professional singer here and serenaded us while waited for the chicken shish.
